Jake Fraser-McGurk has credited a clear mindset and more measured batting approach after producing a stunning century in South Australia’s One-Day Cup win over Queensland at Karen Rolton Oval.
The 24-year old smashed 122 off 63 deliveries, which included the fastest ever half-century in One-Day Cup history off just 14 balls, as South Australia continued its dominant form.
Despite his aggressive approach, Fraser-McGurk said a shift in his mindset has helped him find greater consistency at the crease.
“I think it's just a bit of a mindset thing, being a bit more clear,” he said.
“Playing more cricket shots instead of just trying to slog everything… just time cricket shots, and play more cricket shots, which has been paying off out here.”
Fraser-McGurk also highlighted the importance of his opening partnership with Mackenzie Harvey, with the pair's friendship extending well beyond the cricket pitch.
“He's brilliant to bat with, calms me down nicely,” he said.
He's been my best mate for over 10 years, so we've got a pretty good relationship.”
“He goes out there and goes ‘I want to get you on strike’ and I'm like, mate, just worry about your own batting,”
“He's awesome to have out there every time as an opening partner, couldn't ask for anything more.”
The opener was also pleased with his teammates' contributions, praising captain Nathan McSweeney’s century following his return from international duty.
“He just rolls in and does what he wants the skipper, makes a run-a-ball 100.” he joked.
“He had a good time in India, so I'm super pumped for him… we’re a better team with him in it.”
Fraser-McGurk also praised the return of pace bowler Spencer Johnson, whose raw pace added another dimension to South Australia's bowling attack as he claimed 5/59.
He said Johnson’s presence provided a significant boost to the side, having experienced first-hand the challenge of facing the left-arm quick in the nets.
“We had a net session on a pretty fresh wicket and I was pretty scared… I can't imagine how they're feeling out there,” joked Fraser-McGurk.
“Our heads are a bit taller when he's playing and he's on our side.”
South Australia’s win over Queensland marked its second consecutive bonus-point victory, strengthening its position on the One-Day Cup table, with Fraser-McGurk hopeful the side can maintain its form.
“We missed out last year on the trophy…, but hopefully we cemented our spot and we keep playing really well after the break… and you never know.”
South Australia will return to One-Day Cup action on 16 November, travelling to face New South Wales.
