South Australia has secured a 70-run victory over Victoria at Junction Oval.
After being sent in to bat, South Australia slipped to 3/16 before Matthew Gilkes and Henry Hunt combined to rescue the innings with a crucial 104-run partnership.
Gilkes led the way with a superb 127 from 115 deliveries, bringing up his maiden professional century. The knock follows his unbeaten 97 in his first innings for South Australia last month, continuing an impressive start to his career with the state.
Contributions throughout the middle and lower order ensured South Australia maintained momentum after the Gilkes-Hunt partnership. Henry Hunt added 42, while Jake Lehmann (33), Ben Manenti (35) and Henry Thornton (25) all made valuable runs to help propel the visitors beyond 300, reaching the milestone in the final over of the innings.
Wes Agar (3-35) and Jerrssis Wadia (3-37) gave South Australia the ideal start, claiming three early wickets before the first drinks break and keeping Victoria's scoring rate well below the required mark.
With 15 overs remaining, Victoria still required 114 runs. South Australia regained control through the returning attack of Agar and Wadia, who applied pressure with a series of economical overs before Agar broke through to dismiss Peake and end the key partnership.
The wicket triggered a collapse, with Victoria unable to recover. Ben Manenti (1-55) and Nathan McAndrew (1-53) finished the innings as South Australia secured a convincing 70-run victory at Junction Oval.
South Australia will take on Queensland at Karen Rolton Oval on Saturday October 17.
