'We want those two trophies': South Australia hungry for more

With back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles and a One-Day Cup title in two years, it would be easy to forgive South Australia's men's team for resting on their laurels.

But for head coach Ryan Harris and his squad, this incredible recent success has had the opposite effect.

The team remains hungry for more, with its eyes firmly locked on replicating the success that has made South Australia the benchmark in domestic cricket.

"I think we've strengthened our squad, and that's what we want to try and keep doing. We want to make sure we're competing every year for a Shield final and a One-Day trophy, which we left on the table last year,” he said.

"We want those two trophies sitting next to me this time next year."

It's been a busy off-season for the program, with the squad bolstered by a number of interstate recruits, headlined by Australian-listed opener Jake Weatherald, who returns home after a stint in Tasmania, and hard-hitting wicketkeeper Matthew Gilkes, who has made the move from New South Wales.

There has also been an influx of local South Australian talent, with all-rounder Jerrssis Wadia and two-time Bradman Medallist Noah McFadyen earning opportunities after outstanding performances in Premier Cricket and Second XI competition.

South Australia opens its 2026/27 campaign with a day-night One-Day Cup clash against Western Australia at the WACA.

With several players away on international duties and Australia A tours, the opening fixture presents an opportunity for some fresh faces to earn their first red cap.

Harris said the new recruits would complement a culture built on resilience and an unwavering willingness to compete.

"It's easy to say, 'just go and fight and fight', but they've taken it to the next level," Harris said of the playing group's buy-in to his message.

"We don't like losing, but if we do lose, we fight, and we go down fighting.

"That's probably another thing they've really bought into. We don't give up until that last ball has been bowled."
