Cricket Australia and the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) Foundation are pleased to announce the Under 23 Men’s and Women’s National Indigenous Development Squads for November’s MCG Training Camp.
The camp, which will take place at the MCG on Wurundjeri-Woi Wurrung Country from November 21-25, brings together talented First Nations cricketers from across Australia to undergo a week of intensive training, cultural exchanges and competitive cricket.
The camp will feature two T20 matches against Melbourne Cricket Club Men’s and Women’s XIs on the MCG, as well as training sessions, personal development opportunities and the exploration and celebration of First Nations’ cultures.
The under 23 women’s squad will train under head coach Alex Stewart (WA), while the under 23 men’s will be coached by Jonathan Hill (NSW).
The MCG Training Camp is part of a partnership between Cricket Australia and the MCC Foundation to improve opportunities for First Nations Cricketers and provide development opportunities. MCC Foundation also supports Cricket Australia’s National Indigenous Cricket Championships as part of the partnership, which is now in its fourth year.
James Allsopp, Cricket Australia Chief of Cricket, said:
“It’s great to see so much exciting talent that has been identified through the National Indigenous Championships earlier this year now getting their opportunity to further develop at the training camp.
“The MCG Training Camp offers a fantastic opportunity for First Nations emerging cricketers to continue to hone their skills in an elite environment, as well as engaging with other personal development opportunities and cultural experiences.
“We’re grateful for the ongoing support of the MCC Foundation in offering these development opportunities to build more pathways for talented young First Nations cricketers striving to play in our elite competitions.
“Along with initiatives like the training camp, national championships, and continued investment in participation programs, we are also seeing an increase in the number of First Nations children signing up to play cricket.
“Last summer, we saw First Nations registrations in 5–12-year-old cricket programs increase by 20 per cent, with an encouraging 51 per cent increase in the number of young girls playing across Woolworths Cricket Blast, Smash Series Cricket and Junior Cricket.”
MCC Foundation Chair Christian Johnston said:
"The Melbourne Cricket Club Foundation is delighted to welcome this year's National Indigenous Development Squads, their coaches and support staff to the MCG for our annual training camp.
"Entering the first year of our renewed partnership with Cricket Australia, we're focused on giving First Nations cricketers a genuine pathway to elite competition, along with the privilege of playing on the hallowed turf of the MCG.
"We’re excited to see the skills and connections the players build during the training camp, and we look forward to watching them as their careers progress."
