Celebrating the Women Behind South Australian Cricket

They are the team that helped South Australia write itself into the history books, playing an integral role in the men's squad's back-to-back Sheffield Shield triumphs.

But unlike those who take to the field each week, their contributions largely go unseen.

They are the mothers, wives, partners and female role models whose encouragement, sacrifices and unwavering belief have helped shape the journeys of South Australia's players.

From countless training drop-offs and afternoon teas to words of wisdom and support through every high and low, these women have played an invaluable role behind the scenes.

To recognise those contributions, the South Australian Cricket Association hosted Women Behind the Team at Bleasdale Winery in early August, bringing together players and the significant women in their lives for an afternoon of appreciation and connection.

Players and their guests enjoyed a delicious lunch while sharing stories, forming new friendships and strengthening the bonds that make the South Australian program so unique.

To commemorate the occasion, SACA partner Bleasdale Winery generously provided each guest with a custom wine bottle, creating a lasting reminder of the special day.

One of the most memorable moments came when each player presented a handwritten gratitude letter to the key women in their lives, expressing their appreciation not only for their support throughout their cricket journey, but also for the impact they have had beyond the game.

With several squad members relocating to South Australia to pursue their cricket careers, the event also provided a valuable opportunity to bring families together and further strengthen the family-focused culture that has become a hallmark of the program.

The event follows a similar initiative held last season to celebrate fathers and male role models, which included a behind-the-scenes Adelaide Oval scoreboard tour, lunch with the playing group and the chance to step into the nets alongside their sons.

Men's Program Player Development Manager Sam Milne said the event was an important part of maintaining the strong connections that underpin the success of the South Australian program.

“Events like Women Behind the Team are an important part of our SACA program because they bring our playing group together and celebrate the people who play such a significant role in our players’ lives.

“With many of our squad members coming from interstate, creating opportunities to connect beyond cricket helps strengthen the family-focused environment we have developed at SACA.

“The Women Behind the Team event was a wonderful opportunity for our players to pause, reflect and show gratitude to the important women in their lives.

“From sharing a special lunch at Bleasdale Winery to writing personal gratitude letters, the day created meaningful connections and memories that extend well beyond the cricket field.”
