SACA congratulates Peter George on national umpiring panel appointment

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) congratulates Peter George on his appointment to the Cricket Australia Contracted Umpire Panel (CACUP) for the 2026/27 season.

Joining fellow South Australian Eloise Sheridan, George will be eligible to officiate in all Cricket Australia senior domestic men’s competitions, including the Sheffield Shield, One-Day Cup and KFC BBL.

A former professional cricketer, George enjoyed a 11-season domestic career across South Australia and Queensland. His career highlight came with a Test appearance for Australia, earning Baggy Green No. 416, where he claimed the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar as his maiden Test scalp.

Following his retirement, George transitioned into officiating to remain involved in the game.

He began umpiring SACA Premier Cricket in the 2021/22 season, making his First Grade debut that same year. His progression was rapid, earning representative appointments the following season, including the 2022/23 Under 17 Male National Championships in Tasmania, where he officiated in the final. He also made his debut in the Toyota Second XI competition that season.

Elevated to the South Australia State Umpire Panel ahead of the 2023/24 season, George debuted in both the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) and Weber WBBL, officiated at the Under 19 Male National Championships and was appointed to the SACA Premier Cricket Men’s Division One First Grade Two-Day Grand Final.

His continued development saw him appointed to the inaugural WBBL umpire panel in 2024/25, including his first matches as a TV umpire. He also officiated in the Under 19 Male National Championships final and was selected for both the SACA Premier Cricket Men’s First Grade One-Day and Two-Day Grand Finals.

In 2025/26, George officiated across the WBBL, WNCL and Toyota Second XI competitions. He was appointed to his third Under 19 Male National Championships, standing in the final at the WACA Ground. He also officiated his third SACA Premier Cricket First Grade Grand Final, culminating in his selection to the CACUP.

Cricket Australia Match Officials Manager Luke O’Brien praised George’s transition from player to umpire.

“Peter has demonstrated outstanding growth since transitioning from playing into officiating, and his progression through the pathway has been exceptional.

“His experience as a former international cricketer, combined with his commitment to developing his craft as an umpire, has seen him earn this opportunity.

“We’re excited to welcome him to the contracted panel and thank the SACA for their on-going commitment to developing umpiring in South Australia.”

George will join the CACUP cohort at the Umpires’ Pre-Season Camp in Queensland from 16–19 July.
