From volunteer to Coach of the Year: Alli Gray’s cricket journey

Having never pulled on the whites, Allison Gray’s path into cricket coaching was far from typical.

With just weeks to go before the season opener and no coach secured for her son’s under-10 Para Hills side, Alli stepped in to lend a hand at training when her club needed support.

What she didn’t realise was that club officials had registered her as the team’s head coach—despite her having no prior experience playing or coaching the game.

Rather than shy away from the challenge, Alli leaned into it.

Drawing on the support of fellow club members and tapping into Cricket Australia’s coaching apps and resources, she quickly built both her knowledge and confidence.

Before long, she was running structured, engaging training sessions and fostering a positive environment where her players could thrive.

It didn’t take long for her efforts to make an impact.

Despite the short lead-in, Alli transformed the club’s junior program into an inclusive, highly organised setup that encouraged participation and development. Under her leadership, the team not only enjoyed a strong season—winning the majority of their matches—but also flourished as a cohesive, supportive unit.

Her dedication, care, and commitment to her players have left a lasting impression on the club. Such was her influence, she has already been confirmed to return as coach next season.

In recognition of her incredible efforts, Alli has been named Cricket Australia’s Community Coach of the Year, adding to the state-level honour she received earlier this year.

From stepping in unexpectedly to earning national recognition, Alli Gray’s story is a reminder that great coaching is driven not by experience alone, but by passion, willingness to learn, and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
