South Australia defeat Tasmania in WNCL opener

South Australia have opened its WNCL season in style, toppling Tasmania in an emphatic 36-run victory at Karen Rolton Oval.

Twin centuries from Courtney Webb (123 not out) and Maddie Penna (109) were pivotal in the home side’s victory.

After the Tigers got the wickets of openers Bridget Patterson and Emma de Broughe in quick succession, SA desperately needed a partnership.

While her innings was short lived, Patterson brought up a special milestone, hitting 3,000 WNCL runs.

South Australia’s middle order didn’t take long to pull them back on track, with Penna decimating the Tassie attack with her power hitting.

It was then Webb’s time to shine, bringing up her century, before guiding South Australia home to an impressive 330 off its 50 overs.

After a strong start by Tassie, captain Gemma Barsby turned to debutant Isabella Malgioglio to break the opening partnership of Rachel Trenaman and Lizelle Lee.

The inspired move proved fruitful for SA, with the 23-year-old leg spinner taking her first wicket on just her fifth ball.

Despite explosive opener Lee making a quick-fire 50, South Australia were up for the fight, with Malgioglio combining with fellow leggie Amanda-Jade Wellington to decimate Tassie’s middle order.

Barsby also got in on the fun with a slick catch off her own  bowling, followed by the wicket of the dangerous Elyse Villani by quick Courtney Neale (1/35 off her 10 overs).
