Pope spins SA to famous Shield win

Lloyd Pope has spun South Australia to victory on the final day of their Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at Adelaide Oval.

Pope took 6-74, including the last four wickets, to seal a 138-run win for South Australia.

Having lost the toss, South Australia were asked to bat first, with Henry Hunt again leading from the front.

The determined opener backed up his century from the last game against Queensland with a well-made 62.

He was well supported by captain Alex Carey (44) and Liam Scott (53), as the home side was dismissed early on the second morning for 307.

Ben Manenti was the star with the ball for South Australia in Victoria’s first innings, taking four of the first five wickets, and finishing with figures of 5-73.

Harry Conway was also superb with the ball, claiming 4-39 from his 22 overs.

Sam Harper played a defiant role for the visitors, eventually dismissed by Conway for 89, as Victoria made 232.

Half centuries to Jake Lehmann (60) and Manenti (62*), along with solid contributions from Carey and Conor McInerney, saw Ryan Harris’ men declare late on day three with a lead of 345.

Debutant Henry Thornton picked up his first wicket early on day four, followed by the big wicket of Ashley Chandrasinghe to break an 82-run second wicket partnership.

Victoria continued to be defiant throughout the day, until Pope broke the game open in the 95th over, dismissing Mitchell Perry, to leave the visitors 7-201.

Pope then dismissed the impressive Campbell Kellaway (80 from 208 balls), before claiming the wickets of Peter Siddle and Cameron McClure to seal a brilliant win for South Australia.

South Australia host Victoria in the One Day Cup at Karen Rolton Oval on Wednesday, with the first ball commencing at 10.05am ACDT.
