Scorpions season ended by Victoria

The SA Scorpions haven’t been able to win their final home game of the season, falling to Victoria by four wickets.

Wednesday’s result unfortunately rules the Scorpions out of contention for the 2023/24 WNCL Final.

There was a special moment pre-game, with Sam Betts presenting all-rounder Eleanor Larosa her South Australian cap ahead of her debut WNCL match.

Just like Mondays’ match at Adelaide Oval, Victoria won the toss and sent the Scorpions into bat.

While Emma de Broughe fell cheaply, her fellow opener Bridget Patterson set a good foundation, making 47.

That caused Courtney Webb to stride to the crease and she went on to top score for the Scorpions.

An 84-run partnership between her and Amanda-Jade Wellington saw the pair both raise their bat to celebrate half-centuries.

That partnership helped the Scorpions to a score of 231, before being bowled out in the final over.

Chasing 232 to win, the Victorian openers had a 50-run partnership to begin the second innings, before Anesu Mushangwe got Nicole Faltum caught at deep mid-wicket.

The highlight of the bowling innings came four overs later, when Larosa took her maiden WNCL wicket, removing Victorian skipper Sophie Molineux, with help from a good juggling catch from Webb.

Another highlight was the ball from Sam Betts that bowled Meg Lanning, getting Monday’s Player of the Match out for 30.

After that, Tess Flintoff and Sophie Reid developed a good partnership of 116, taking the game away from SA.

The Scorpions continued to fight with two wickets in two balls from Betts late in the innings, but it wasn’t quite enough as Victoria secured victory in the 47th over.

Unfortunately, Kate Peterson was hit on her right thumb whilst fielding off her own bowling and sat out the rest of the innings. She will have scans tonight to assess the extent of the injury.

There is one round remaining of the WNCL season, with the Scorpions set to travel to New South Wales to take on the home side on Thursday, February 15 and Saturday, February 17.
