A native of Broken Hill, Samantha Betts was spotted by former Australian international Shelley Nitschke whilst still at school and was parachuted onto the SA Scorpions list as a 17-year-old in 2012, travelling from Broken Hill once a week for training whilst she finished her studies. Despite the travel, she debuted for SA that season. In 2016, Betts was the recipient of the Adam Gilchrist Scholarship, awarded to the best female cricketer in Australia aged 21 or under from rural Australia, which allowed her to travel to the UK and represent Hampshire. In 2018/19, Betts became just the third SA woman to take a five-wicket haul since the inception of the WNCL in 1996/97. Betts is in the top 10 wicket takers for the Scorpions.
