South Australian fast bowler Brendan Doggett says the prospect of playing a Test match at Adelaide Oval would be a “dream come true” as he prepares for what will be a huge summer of cricket.
With tickets now on sale for the Adelaide Christmas Test against New Zealand in December and the Adelaide ODI against England in November, Doggett hopes his recent Test debut will be a springboard to more opportunities with the Australian team.
“It's going to be our biggest summer ever, for test cricket especially,” Doggett said.
“It's good news for all cricket lovers… there's gonna be a lot of cricket on the calendar.”
For Doggett, the focus is putting himself in contention for Australia’s opening assignments of the summer, including the Bangladesh Test Series in August.
After making his Australian Test debut in Perth last year, the 32-year-old said the experience only increased his desire to return to the highest level.
“It's been a whirlwind, sort of still doesn't really feel real, the way it all ended up, but obviously really proud,”
“It's pretty addicting, playing in front of big crowds, and in big series like that, and playing for your country.”
A hamstring injury late last season disrupted Doggett’s momentum and ruled him out of South Australia’s Sheffield Shield final in March. While he was thrilled to see his teammates get the job done, he acknowledged feeling disappointed not to play a role on the field.
“It was a strange feeling. Obviously, elated for the boys to make it and win it in such a good game as well, but a bit flat not to be part of it.”
After spending the off season focusing on rehabilitation, Doggett says he is fully fit and ready for the next challenge.
“I've had plenty of rest and plenty of rehab, so everything's priming well to hopefully be part of that series against Bangladesh.”
“I feel like I've done the work now, and hopefully, can reap the rewards.”
While Australia’s pace attack remains highly competitive, Doggett believes a busy international schedule could create opportunities.
“There's a pretty good pedigree of fast bowlers ahead of me at the moment.
“It's a huge summer, there's going to be rotations, there's going to be workloads, bowlers are going to be in and out, so hopefully I can just play a part in that and when I am needed, be able to perform.”
Among the potential opportunities this summer, Doggett has his sights set on one match in particular.
With Adelaide Oval set to host another huge test match against New Zealand in December, Doggett said the chance to represent Australia in front of an Adelaide crowd would be the ultimate achievement.
“I think Adelaide, it's definitely one of the best test matches in terms of atmosphere… to be able to play here would be a dream come true.”
