South Australia bolsters men’s squad ahead of 2026/27 season

After securing back‑to‑back Sheffield Shield titles, the South Australian men’s program has further strengthened its list with a blend of proven experience and emerging talent.

Australian opener Jake Weatherald rejoins South Australia after a three-year stint in Tasmania, which saw him catapult into the Test side after compiling 906 runs in the 2024/25 Shield season.

Debuting for South Australia in 2016, the left-handed opener quickly impressed, hitting 66 and 96 in the 2015/16 Shield Final at Glenelg.

Over his eight years in South Australian colours, Weatherald played 60 First Class games, amassing just over 3,800 runs, including nine centuries.

Weatherald also wrote himself into the record books in the shorter formats of the game, becoming the first person to score a century in a BBL Final.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Gilkes also joins South Australia, after 45 First Class appearances for New South Wales.

Debuting against South Australia in 2019, the talented left‑hander has since registered 19 half‑centuries, with two of those coming in the final game of NSW’s 2025/26 season.

Adelaide all-rounder Noah McFadyen has been awarded a state contract after an outstanding Premier Cricket season, which saw him awarded his second consecutive Bradman Medal.

The talented 23-year-old impressed with bat and ball, amassing more than 1100 runs and 50 wickets across all first-grade competitions, earning him selection at the Second XI level and a place in South Australia’s extended squad for the final minor round match against Victoria.

All-rounder Jerrssis Wadia has also secured a state contract after starring for Tea Tree Gully and at the Second XI level.

The emerging prospect made a name for himself on the national stage, establishing himself through eye‑catching performances for the Adelaide Strikers.

Exciting quick Campbell Thompson has been rewarded for a breakout Sheffield Shield season, earning promotion from the rookie list to a full‑time state contract.

The 22-year-old East Torrens product impressed in his First Class debut, claiming two wickets for just 16 runs off 14 overs.

Adelaide University all-rounder Thomas Brown, Tea Tree Gully batsman Kane Halfpenny and Northern Districts quick Hayden Schiller have all been elevated to the rookie list.

All three players are graduates of South Australia’s Pathways Program, capping off a landmark year for the program following SA’s Under 19s National Championship success.
