Runs hot in top of the table WNCL clash

Saturday saw the first match of a top of the table, double fixture between South Australia and Queensland at Adelaide Oval.

In Jemma Barsby’s absence, Bridget Patterson put on the captain’s jacket for the hosts and got her first win early by winning the toss and electing to bowl in hot Adelaide conditions.

Courtney Neale was the early highlight, with an early LBW shout and eventual dismissal of Lauren Winfield-Hill in just the fifth over.

Georgia Redmayne and Charli Knott looked solid from the start, threatening to put on a big total for the visitors, before returning off-spinner Alex Price broke through and claimed Knott’s wicket.

Redmayne (125*) stood strong throughout the innings and combined with a consistent Jess Jonassen (78) and a powerful Grace Harris (59) to put the pressure on late in the innings.

Falling just short of a hat-trick, Emmerson Filsell stood up at the death and finished with South Australia’s best bowling figures of the day, 2-49.

In her 99th outing for her home state, Patterson didn’t get the start she wanted and fell early without troubling the scorers.

It was then Emma de Broughe and Courtney Webb who dug in and put on 90 runs before de Broughe fell to a deceptive Jonassen ball.

Hollie Armitage picked up right where de Broughe left off, partnering with Webb to put on a 110-run partnership and South Australia appeared to be placed well to chase the big total.

Webb went on to add another century to her profile, finishing up with a fantastic 120.

Unfortunately, from there wickets fell consistently and a brave late cameo from Neale (19*) wasn’t enough to reach Queensland’s total.

South Australia was bowling out for 303 on the final ball of the innings, falling nine runs short of victory.

South Australia and Queensland will meet again at Adelaide Oval on Monday, 3 February 2025 in a high stakes rematch.
