South Australia unable to force result in rain-affected game against WA

South Australia couldn't force a result in their Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia as rain shortened the game.

SA retained the Rod Marsh Trophy with a draw in their day-night game at Adelaide Oval. Henry Thornton impressed with the ball as Nathan McSweeney and Henry Hunt both passed fifty in their sole innings with the bat.

With Day 1 washed out by rain, clear skies greeted the teams on Day 2. Western Australia won the toss and elected to bat.

The quicks bowled miserly early on as Thornton dismissed both openers cheaply. Wickets continually fell throughout the innings, with Ben Manenti taking 3-40 and Thornton taking another to finish with figures of 3-25.

In the end, WA were skittled for 188 inside 67 overs.

South Australia started well with the bat and managed to navigate a tricky session under the lights. They made it to stumps just one wicket down and with 100 runs on the board.

Hunt and McSweeney resumed on Day 3, adding to their good start. The opener made 58, with the captain getting to 68. Eight of the top nine reached double figures as Ryan Harris’ side posted 333.

Jordan Buckingham added another two wickets to his haul just before the close of Day 3 to leave WA on 85/2 overnight. However, the pitch offered very little to the bowlers on the final day and chances were few and far between.

Hanno Jacobs got Jayden Goodwin with a beauty that took the top of off and Thornton took three in the evening. However, the game petered out to a draw with the pitch offering little assistance to the bowlers.

The draw ensured South Australia retained the Rod Marsh Trophy, highlighting a resilient performance across three challenging days.
