South Australia have been defeated in its opening Sheffield Shield match, with Victoria claiming victory in a nail-biting finish at Adelaide Oval.
After losing three quick wickets early on day one, Henry Hunt (126 runs off 307 balls) and Jake Lehmann (113 off 188 balls) were able to dig in for South Australia.
The much-needed 218-run partnership not only dragged the team back into the game, but put our side in the box seat, with a first innings score of 350.
After SA snagged three wickets on day two, SA debutant Hanno Jacobs followed up with the ball, claiming two wickets in the same over.
But the Vics were able to mount their own comeback through Peter Handscomb (103) and Fergus O’Neil (64), helping their side towards a first innings total of 343.
In a disappointing second innings display, South Australia slumped to five for 82 late on day three.
Desperate for a partnership, Harry Nielsen (52) and Daniel Drew (46) were pivotal for South Australia, combining for 102 runs for the sixth wicket.
But in a tense final day, South Australia only managed to add 54 runs to its overnight total, being bowled out for 223.
With NSW cruising at 0-57 with the bat, Jacobs struck first with the ball, catching the edge of Blake Macdonald.
His efforts were followed by quick Jordan Buckingham, who snagged the prized wickets of Marcus Harris and the Victorian skipper in consecutive balls.
The quick was agonisingly close to claiming a hat-trick, with his third ball bobbling out of the hands of short leg.
It was then Lloyd Pope’s time to shine, with the leggie claiming two wickets, putting South Australia firmly back into contention.
But it wasn’t to be, with Victoria chasing down the runs six wickets down.
