Scorpions dealt Victorian blow at Adelaide Oval

Victoria had a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over the SA Scorpions at Adelaide Oval on Monday night.

Playing on Adelaide Oval for the first time in over a decade, the Scorpions were sent into bat by Victoria.

It wasn’t a great beginning by the team in red, with only Josie Dooley (23) getting a proper start to an innings, before losing four wickets in the first 14 overs - including the loss of three wickets in quick succession without adding a run.

As the Scorpions fell to 4-43, captain Jemma Barsby came to the crease and she anchored the remainder of the innings.

Maddie Penna (26) and Ella Wilson (21) had the two biggest partnerships with Barsby, as she hit seven boundaries on her way to 78 runs, getting her side to a defendable total of 210.

The highlight of the Scorpions bowling innings happened early on, with Wilson taking a cracking, diving catch at point off the bowling of Kate Peterson to remove Victorian captain Sophie Molineux.

A 50-run partnership between Nicole Faltum and Meg Lanning followed, with Amanda-Jade Wellington getting the breakthrough and bowling Faltum on 36.

The Scorpions weren’t able to fully get the momentum swung their way though, with Lanning and Sophie Reid starting a 130-run partnership that wasn’t to be beaten.

Victoria chased the 211 runs with 14 overs spare to secure their eight-wicket win.

An opportunity for the Scorpions to fight back comes on Wednesday, with the two sides set to face off again, this time at Karen Rolton Oval.

The match will begin at 10am, with free entry and all match day information can be found here.
