Promising wicketkeeper Harry Nielsen and emerging paceman Nick Winter could line up against the Bushrangers in the Redbacks’ first match of the new year.
Nielsen, 22, scored an impressive ton for Woodville in the West End One-Day Cup on Sunday after making his BBL debut with the Adelaide Strikers in Friday night’s semi-final.
Left-arm seamer Winter has performed strongly across all formats in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old claimed eight wickets, including 7/38 in the opening innings, in Adelaide University’s first grade clash with East Torrens. Winter also finished with tidy figures of 2/28 in University’s West End Twenty20 Cup semi-final win last Tuesday.
Batsmen Alex Ross and Kelvin Smith and allrounder Tom Andrews also feature in the 12-player squad and are all eyeing their maiden first-class matches of the summer.
Experienced Redback Tom Cooper will captain South Australia for the first time in first-class cricket in the absence of Travis Head.
Head, wicketkeeper Alex Carey and bowlers Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa were all unavailable for selection due to commitments with Australia’s Gillette T20I Tri-Series squad.
South Australia will also be without experienced batsman Callum Ferguson, who suffered a hamstring injury while playing with the Sydney Thunder in BBL|07.
“Ferg strained his right hamstring last month,” said SACA General Manager of High Performance Tim Nielsen.
“His rehabilitation is going to plan, but he won’t be available for this week’s match.
“We’ll continue to monitor his progress throughout his recovery.”
Play begins from 10:30am at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, 8 February. Entry is free.
