South Australia captain Head is set to skipper a ‘Haddin XII’ featuring Carey as wicketkeeper against a Tim Paine-led ‘Hick XII’ in Australia’s final tune up before next month’s first Test in Birmingham.

The two teams were chosen by opposing coaches Graeme Hick and Brad Haddin in a draft-style selection format overseen by Australian Head Coach Justin Langer and National Selector Trevor Hohns.

Head, who will bat at No.4 in the match, strengthened his claim for a place in Australia’s starting XI with an unbeaten 139 in a first-class outing in Canterbury, backing up a 138 for Australia A in a List A clash earlier in the month.

Named in the ICC’s World Cup Team of the Tournament, Carey clocked three half-centuries to score the most runs by a No.7 in Cup history during Australia’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.

Similar to many in the squad, Tuesday will be Carey’s first red-ball match since December when he compiled a match-saving 110* in a Sheffield Shield clash for South Australia against New South Wales at the SCG.

Usman Khawaja is nursing a hamstring injury and will miss the intra-squad hit-out.

The match begins from 11am (7:30pm ACST) on Tuesday in Southampton ahead of the first Ashes Test on 1 August.
