Bradman Medallist Conor McInerney, Elliot Opie and Luke Robins have been given their first full State contracts.

Opening batter McInerney, 24, broke into the Sheffield Shield side for the last two games last season after scoring heavily for Woodville in Premier Cricket and also the Redbacks in the Toyota Futures League.

Right-arm fast-medium bowler Opie, 26, has not featured for the Redbacks since the 2015-16 season when he played two Sheffield Shield games, including the grand final.

Allrounder Robins, 23, was the leading wicket-taker in the Futures League, taking 31 wickets in five games.

Three South Australians – captain Travis Head, Kane Richardson and Alex Carey – have Cricket Australia contracts.

General Manager, High Performance Tim Nielsen said the new Redbacks squad members had worked hard to impress.

“They have all put their hands up by making runs and taking wickets at Premier Cricket and Futures League level and they have also shown great commitment to improving their games through the Emerging Redbacks program,” he said.

“It’s also great to have three players with CA contracts as this allows us to offer more State squad positions to young players.”

Promising 17-year-old legspinner Tom O’Connell was offered a rookie contract but has been recruited by Victoria.

“It was disappointing to lose Tom at this early stage of his career but we wish him all the best,” Nielsen said.

“We have a policy of waiting for young players to finish their schooling before offering full contracts.

“There’s a lot of competition for our spin positions. We have (leg-spinners) Adam Zampa and Lloyd Pope on our list and Tom could see better opportunities over there.”

Nick Benton and rookie Daniel Drew do not have Redbacks contracts for the 2018-19 season.
