The Bulls hold an eight-point buffer at the top of the Shield table after holding off a fast-finishing South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

Blazing innings from Alex Carey (98 off 107) and captain Travis Head (85 off 89) gave the West End Redbacks hope on a tense final day, but the visitors held their nerve to consolidate their spot in first place.

The Redbacks slumped to sixth after the loss but remain within a win of second spot such has been the competitive nature of this summer’s Shield season.

Monday’s clash with Tasmania at Blundstone Arena looms as a defining contest for both states.

The Tigers had to settle for a draw against New South Wales in rain-affected match at the SCG, maintaining the logjam in the middle of the Shield table.

Victoria was the big mover of Round Eight. The reigning champions jumped from last to second place with a convincing 255-run win over an undermanned Western Australia.

Chris Tremain’s 10-wicket haul vaulted him to the top of this season’s wicket-takers leaderboard while Bushrangers batsman Aaron Finch blasted an unbeaten 151 for the biggest individual score of the round.
