A fresh start for a new-look South Australian lineup against last year’s Sheffield Shield champions. Several young players will get first opportunity to stake their claims for a regular place in SA’s starting XI, including uncapped duo Wes Agar and Henry Hunt, with senior figures such as Chadd Sayers, Joe Mennie, Daniel Worrall and Callum Ferguson all missing. The opening match will give the Redbacks a great benchmark to measure themselves against an experienced Victorian outfit which features seven Test-capped players.
Redback to watch – Alex Carey
Carey has been one of the country’s form players across all formats. He’s only been dismissed once in his past four first-class innings which has returned two half-centuries for UK county club Sussex and an unbeaten century in his most recent Shield outing for SA. The left-hander’s match-winning 80* in the Redbacks’ Marsh One-Day Cup victory over Tasmania last week was another example of a man in form.
Danger player – James Pattinson
The Victorian paceman ripped through SA’s top order with three of the first four wickets of the match the last time the two teams met. Pattinson will be one of many vying for a spot in Australia’s Test squad ahead of a big home summer and will need to be watched closely by SA’s batting order.
