Beginning in Adelaide on December 17, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be played for over four tests, with India looking to retain the title after completing a 2-1 triumph in 2018-19.

Head has played 17 Tests for Australia since debuting against Pakistan in 2018 and currently averages just under 42 on the international stage. The left-handed middle-order batsman holds his place in the squad on the back of a strong start to the Marsh Sheffield Shield season with South Australia.

Often coming to the middle with his side in trouble, Head has compiled two stunning centuries and a solid half-century during the opening rounds, headlined by a remarkable 171* to help the Redbacks secure a stoic draw against Tasmania.

Head was also instrumental in the shared result against Victoria in round three, crunching 20 boundaries during his knock of 151 from 296 deliveries.

Speaking of the announcement, national selector Trevor Hohns emphasised the value and leadership Head brings to the Test squad:

“Travis remains an important member of the senior leadership group and has been integral in the recent success of the side which is now ranked as the best Test team in the world. He has been a great support to Tim and is a very experienced leader.”

Head is the sole South Australian representative in the squad, with wicketkeeper Alex Carey named in an extended Australia A squad.
