But a scratchy start from the home side’s top-order flung the match right back into the balance as South Australia were reduced to 4-53, Sandhu the destroyer with three quick wickets to give the Blues a sniff.
But an important 45 from Sturt all-rounder Alex Gregory helped arrest the visitors' momentum as he and Nielsen put on 41 for the fifth-wicket to help South Australia regain the ascendency.
It was far from a clinical finish however, the New South Wales attack relentless as South Australia continued to haemorrhage wickets to see the result come down to the wire.
With play extended by an extra half hour it came down to the final wicket as tail-enders Nick Winter (18*) and Elliot Opie (3*) took to the crease, Winter eventually smashing a boundary off the bowling of Nair to see the South Australia home in a thrilling finish.
The win sees South Australia finish the season with two wins, two draws and two losses from their six matches.
