Two wickets in the second innings against Tasmania have lifted the clever paceman’s career total to 193, taking him past Geff Noblet and George Giffen. He is only nine wickets behind Jason Gillespie.

It has taken Sayers only 45 Shield games to reach the top 10 and his average runs per wicket is the lowest of this leading group.

Sayers, 29, has now taken 54 wickets this season to be the leading wicket-taker in the Shield competition.

He was also the competition’s leading wicket-taker in the 2012-13 season, with 48 wickets at 18.52.
