It is the first time 25-year-old Carey has been selected for Australia A, with the highly-rated wicketkeeper picked as the only gloveman for both the four-day and one-day squads after his record-breaking 59 dismissals in last season’s Sheffield Shield competition.

West End Redbacks captain Travis Head, who will play for Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy in England next month, has also been named in both 14-player squads for the South Africa tour and will captain the one-day side.

Sheffield Shield Player of the Year Chadd Sayers earned a spot in the four-day squad and paceman Kane Richardson will feature in the one-day series.

National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “We have opted for a well-balanced squad featuring some experience blended with younger players, with an emphasis on building our depth for the future.

“This is a great chance for these players to experience foreign conditions against a quality international sides and really test their skills.

“With an upcoming Test Series in South Africa early next year it is also an opportunity to impress with their performances and put their names forward for consideration.”

Australia A will play two four-day matches against South Africa A before participating in a one-day Tri-Series with South Africa A and India A.

The squad will depart for South Africa on 8 July.
