Rolton knock not enough
A blistering 81 off 56 balls from SA captain Karen Rolton was not enough to stop the WNCL ladder leaders Victoria from claiming victory at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
Earlier in the day the Victorians posted an imposing 3/295 largely due to Vic Spirit captain Rachael Haynes’ 126 off 134 balls, and Sarah Elliot’s 92 off 116 balls.
The Scorpions’ run chase began solidly with an opening stance of 110 between Shelley Nitschke (57 off 74) and Julie Woerner (48 off 73).
The loss of Nitschke in the 22nd over brought the SA skipper to the crease who batted sensibly through tough periods of the game to bring up her 50 off 44 balls before unleashing her next 31 runs off just 12 deliveries.
Wickets fell at regular intervals around Rolton and made it tough going for the home side to stay within reach of the required run rate, eventually finishing the day at 8/228.
The Scorpion’s final round of games will be next week against reigning title holders NSW in NSW.

Women's National Cricket League - Scorpions v VicSpirit
Friday 8 January 2010, Adelaide Oval
Vic Spirit 2 from 2
The Scorpions have succumbed to their second loss in two days at the hands of the Vic Spirit at Adelaide Oval on Friday.
Loose bowling enabled the visitors to post a 74 run opening stand thanks to a confident innings of 51 off 37 from Spirit batter Elyse Villani.
The Scorpions displayed periods of resistance largely due to the second spell of Shelley Nitschke (2/51 off 10) and an inspiring effort from rookie Megan Schutt (1/24 off 6)
however they could not apply the sustained pressure required to limit the Spirit total, who eventually posted a competitive 9/254.
The Spirit took advantage of ‘score board pressure’ by claiming Scorpion’s opener Nitschke with the score on 3. The experience of Karen Rolton (47 off71) and Julie Woerner pushed the SA total to 75 until Woerner’s dismissal (38 off 50) trigged the loss of 2 more wickets for no score.
Apart from Woerner and Rolton there were only two other Scorpion batters who posted double figures, handing a dominating 100 run victory to the Spirit in the 40th over.

Bulow demolishes Scorpions
The Konica Minolta Queensland Fire spoiled the Scorpion's chances of gaining maximum points in all three Women’s National League games this weekend by staging a big victory over the Scorpions at Park 25 on Sunday.
Posting a formidable 8/276 the Fire was in the box seat with scoreboard pressure, Mel Bulow again the back bone of the Fire’s innings with a sensational 130 off just 128 balls. The Scorpions claimed an opener early on but Bulow and Danielle Hollis put on a 122 second wicket partnership that proved costly for the home side.
Neisha Iles (2/45 off 10) and Steph Morrison (4/54 off 10) provided some resistance for the Scorpions with the ball, but the damage had already been done via Bulow’s willow. South Australia's innings got off to a horror start losing Saturday’s centurion, Shelley Nitschke in only the second over. Soon after that, Julie Woerner followed Nitschke back into the shed.
Captain Karen Rolton, notched up a gutsy 84 and worked well with Tamara Clapton (22) and Fiona McDonald (37), however the other Scorpions’ batters failed to exploit the excellent batting wicket. The Scopions were eventually all out for 174 in the 48th over, and the Fire secured a 100 run victory.
The Scorpions will next face ladder leaders, Victoria at home in the New Year.

Scorpions scold Fire
Relentless bowling from Neisha Iles again (0/25 off 10) and Rhianna Peate (0/25 off 7) stemmed the steady flow of runs in a crucial stage of the innings, giving the home side the momentum into the 1st drinks break. A late scare from the Konica Minolta Queensland Fire was not enough to stop the South Australian Scorpions from notching up their second win in the WNCL this season.
The Scorpions sent the visitors in to bat and the move almost proved costly as the Fire raced away to a solid start at Park 25 this morning.
The Scorpions took their first wicket in the 41st over for Scorpions claimed after a tremendous batting performance from Fire openers, Mel Bulow (110 off 154) and Lyndal Daley (89 off 124). Given that the Fire had many wickets in hand the Scorpions did well to keep them to 240 off the 50 overs with the loss of 3 wickets.
The Scorpions then produced an all out attack with the bat getting off to a flyer of their own thanks to a 100 run opening partnership between Shelley Nitschke and Julie Woerner (42 off 40). Nitschke then went on to produce an outstanding century (109 off 118) - her second of the season. She combined with Rolton (50 off 60) to take the Scorpions' total to 1/ 213 and the home side looked to be cruising until Nitschke was caught on the boundary looking to claim the bonus point.
Unnerved, the Scorpions lost a startling 6/17. The Scorpions claimed the victory in the 42nd over with a final score of 8/241.
Game two of the double header gets underway at 10am at Park 25 tomorrow.

Women's National Cricket League - Scorpions v Fury
15 November 2009 - St Peter's College
Lauren Ebsary A quality 82 from South Australian opener Shelley Nitschke wasn't enough to see the Scorpions home as the Western Fury claimed a narrow two-wicket victory in their one-day clash on Sunday afternoon. Nitschke was the only Scorpions' batswoman to really trouble the Western Australians, the opener standing firm while her partners fell around her as SA was eventually bowled out for 191 in the 47th over.
In reply, Western Australia squeaked homed with just seven balls and two wickets remaining as the Scorpions fought hard in an effort to claim their second win in this competition. Lauren Ebsary proved the driving force for WA once again, claiming 3-37 from her nine overs before turning her attention to batting, scoring 48 from 44 balls as she opened the Fury's run chase. Ebsary and WA skipper Peta Merrilees combined for a 56-run second-wicket partnership that looked to have established a solid foundation for the chase.
But after a succession of quick wickets it was up to Renae Farrell (25) and Donna Brown (18) to ease the pressure, the pair slowing the tempo and grinding out 48 runs from 12 overs during the middle stages. The result sees Western Australia climb into third on the WNCL one-day standings with eight points, as the Scorpions languish in sixth.

Women's National Cricket League - Scorpions v Meteors
31 October 2009 - Manuka Oval, Canberra
The South Australian Scorpions have triumphed over the ACT Meteors in the Women's National Cricket League by 34 runs following a dynamic batting display.
The Scorpions won the toss and chose to bat at Manuka Oval and compiled a massive score of 3-301 off their 50 overs, which proved too much for the home side to pull back.
Centuries from Sally Nitschke (119 not out) and Karen Rolton (129) provided the backbone for the Scorpion innings while Em Preston was the pick of the bowlers for the home team with figures of 2-36.
The Meteors fought hard in response with plenty of batsmen getting a start, but no one could break through for a century against some effective bowling from the South Australians.
Preston capped a fine all-round performance with 63 while Lisa Kushert and Laura Wright both made 39. Neisha Iles bowled well with figures of 3-41 that helped restrict the Meteors to 267 all out.
