Women's Cricket: Season 2010-11 and beyond

09-090910 Womens A Grade Grand Final 0910

Women's Cricket stakeholders were invited to a Forum in March 2010. Participants were asked a range of questions, including:

  • How do we get more girls playing cricket?
  • What is the role of the SACA?
  • What is the role of the clubs?

Over 200 responses were provided on the evening.

Since the Forum in March, the Women's Cricket Committee has considered every suggestion/issue raised, with four key themes identified:

  • Profile and promotion of women’s cricket
  • Volunteers
  • Participation and development pathway
  • Coach education

At a follow up Women's Cricket Seminar in September 2010, the following strategies were presented and will be implemented during the 2010-11 cricket season:

Profile and Promotion of Women’s Cricket

  • Schedule women’s Twenty20 matches as curtain raisers to men’s Twenty20 matches at a state and grade competition level
  • Raise the media profile of women’s cricket by:-
    • Including a ‘double page spread’ in each edition of SACA’s Between Wickets publication
    • Each A Grade club (seven clubs) to target a ‘special interest’ article in the Messenger Press
    • A women’s cricket summary to be included in SACA’s submission to the weekly Sportsbeat publication
    • SACA to produce ‘advertising banners’ for clubs and WMPF advertising women’s cricket
    • Incorporate participants from SACA’s Boy Free Zone program in a pre match event at Scorpion’s matches at Adelaide Oval
    • SACA to investigate communication opportunities through social media (ie Facebook and Twitter)

Volunteers

  • Promote ‘It’s a family affair’ whereby grandparents, parents and brothers/sisters are targeted as key volunteers for women’s cricket
  • SACA to coordinate a volunteer education session including ‘how to recruit volunteers’
  • Conduct a volunteer recognition day

Participation and Development Pathway

  • Implement the Boy Free Zone Program in selected schools
  • Introduce a community cricket competition similar to Para Districts Cricket Association women’s competition in the north east metropolitan area
  • Provide financial support in the form of team playing  equipment from the ‘Women in Cricket’ (WIC) Fund for clubs or schools that create new women’s or girl’s teams
  • Continually review the format of the SACA women’s grade competition

Coach Education

  • Conduct a ‘women’s only’ coach, umpire and scorer education session
  • Consider using WIC Fund to assist in reducing cost of Level 1 and/or 2 courses for women’s coaches
  • Ensure that all coaches in women’s cricket are accredited coaches
  • Develop a women’s cricket mentor program and submit a proposal to the WMPF Trust for financial support
