Fresh faces named in Redbacks squad
February 19, 2016
The West End Redbacks have made four changes to their side that will face the New South Wales Blues at C.ex Coffs International Stadium next week.
Tom Cooper and Tim Ludeman have both been omitted from the team, while Adam Zampa joins the Australian T20 squad ahead of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 and is unavailable for selection.
“We felt as a selection group that both players, whilst senior players and important parts of our group, had been given seven games this season of opportunity and neither of them had really grabbed that opportunity to make runs,” said General Manager High Performance, Tim Nielsen.
“With three games to go and the potential to still play in a Sheffield Shield final, we were keen to try and do something after a couple of losses to spark a change in performance.”
Coming in to the side are Emerging Redbacks squad members Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald who have both been rewarded for their strong performances in the West End Premier Cricket competition this summer.
Averaging over 90 for Glenelg in first grade cricket this season, Carey is expected to be selected as the Redbacks’ wicket-keeper for the match, having already made his Sheffield Shield debut in 2013.
“Carey’s form with the bat in both South Australia’s second XI and Premier Cricket level has been outstanding. I think he’s made three hundred in his last five or six hits, so he’s made lots of runs and can bat at the top of the order and wicket-keep,” said Nielsen.
He’s joined in the squad by left-hand batsman Weatherald who comes into the team on the back of some impressive batting performances with Adelaide University, including a high score of 176 not-out against West Torrens.
“Tom Cooper misses out to Jake Weatherald who made a hundred in the last Futures League game against Western Australia at Glenelg Oval and he’s made some runs for Adelaide University in the premier competition as well this year.
"He plays well off both the front and back foot, so we felt the time was right to introduce him into the team also.”
Tom Andrews also re-joins the squad to replace Zampa after an impressive domestic first-class debut against Queensland at Adelaide Oval, while Gary Putland is a chance to play his first Sheffield Shield match since February last year.
After being selected as the twelfth man against Victoria, Nick Benton has been ruled out of the clash due to illness.
